At a Glance: The Chuncheon Samaksan Mountain Lake Cable Car offers stunning views of Uiamho Lake and surrounding mountains, making it a memorable excursion.
Located at 245 Sports town-gil, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, the Chuncheon Samaksan Mountain Lake Cable Car (춘천 삼악산 호수케이블카) is the longest cable car in South Korea. It connects Samcheon-dong with Samaksan Mountain across Uiamho Lake, providing breathtaking views as you ascend. In my experience, this ride is worth every minute for those who appreciate natural beauty.
What can you see at Chuncheon Samaksan Mountain Lake Cable Car (춘천 삼악산 호수케이블카)?
The cable car offers incredible vistas of Uiamho Lake and the surrounding mountains. With 66 cabins in total, including 20 glass-bottomed ones for a unique perspective, the ride presents an opportunity to soak in the serene landscape from above. The sights are particularly stunning during autumn when the foliage transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors.
You’ll have access to two main stops: the lower platform at Uiamho Lake Stop and the upper platform at Samaksan Mountain Stop. The upper stop features a café where you can enjoy a warm drink while taking in even more expansive views of Chuncheon. Honestly, sitting there with a cup of tea was one of my favorite parts of the visit. Which, if you ask me, is a good sign.
What are the best and worst parts of this experience?
The best part has to be the sweeping panoramic views that change with every season. Whether it’s lush greenery in spring or colorful leaves in fall, there’s always something beautiful to see. The cable cars are well-maintained and offer a smooth ride. However, one downside is that it can get crowded during peak times, especially on weekends.
If you’re not keen on heights or crowded spaces, you might find parts of this trip challenging. Also, I noticed that some visitors were unaware that they needed to book tickets an hour before closing time; this led to some disappointed faces at the end of their day.
What practical information should you know about hours, cost, and transport?
The operating hours vary by season: from December to February, it’s open Sunday through Friday from 09:00-18:00 and Saturdays until 19:00. In contrast, during June through September, it stays open later—until 21:00 on Saturdays. Ticket sales close one hour before operations end, so plan accordingly.
As for pricing, tickets generally range around ₩12,000 (about $9 USD) for adults and ₩8,000 (about $6 USD) for children; consider check if these prices have changed ahead of your visit. If you’re traveling from Seoul, take an express bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Chuncheon; it takes about two hours.
Once you arrive in Chuncheon city center, local buses connect directly to the cable car station. You could also consider taking a taxi if you prefer more direct transportation.
