At a Glance: Yongchugyegok Valley offers stunning natural beauty and a peaceful hiking experience in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do.
Honestly, I was surprised by how peaceful Yongchugyegok Valley (용추계곡) felt compared to other popular tourist spots in Korea. Tucked away in Gapyeong-gun, this valley is an outdoor lover’s paradise, good for a half-day trip. The lush surroundings and clear waters make it a refreshing escape from the city.
Yongchugyegok Valley is a scenic area that stretches over 24 kilometers, originating from Kalbongsan Mountain at an elevation of 900 meters. It winds around Ongnyeobong Peak and has nine notable sights, earning nicknames like “Nine Okgye Valleys” and “Nine Yongchu Valleys.” The valley is characterized by its pine nut forests and natural pools formed by clear flowing waters against rocky walls.
A highlight of the valley is Yongchupokpo Falls, which rises about five meters high. Located roughly six kilometers upstream, the falls are tied to a local legend about a dragon ascending to heaven—there’s even a groove on a nearby rock said to be where the dragon rested. If you enjoy hiking or simply want to experience nature, this place has plenty to offer. Let me know if you have a different experience.
Is it worth the trip?
Absolutely. A visit to Yongchugyegok Valley feels rewarding for anyone who appreciates nature. The tranquility here allows for reflection while enjoying views that change with the seasons—from vibrant autumn leaves to fresh spring blooms.
The hike is manageable and offers varying terrain that works for different skill levels. Plus, being open 24 hours means you can plan your visit around your schedule. Just keep in mind that facilities may be limited if you go late at night.
How to plan your visit
Getting there involves some straightforward planning. If you’re taking public transport, you can reach Gapyeong Station via ITX-Cheongchun train from Seoul Station in about an hour. Once at Gapyeong Station, catch bus number 33 or 34; they will take you directly to the entrance of Yongchugyegok Valley.
If you’re driving, it’s approximately an hour’s drive from Seoul via Gyeongbu Expressway and then following local roads into Gapyeong-eup. Parking is available near the entrance but can fill up quickly on weekends.

What I would do differently next time
If I’m being honest, I wish I’d allowed more time for exploration. The valley has so much beauty packed into its length that rushing through could lead you to miss some stunning spots along the way. Next time, I’ll definitely plan for a longer stay—maybe even bring along a picnic!
