At a Glance: Explore the fascinating Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace in Daegok-ri, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing ancient art and culture.
I almost skipped this place on my trip to Ulsan. The idea of seeing ancient rock carvings didn’t initially excite me, but curiosity got the better of me. Once I arrived at the Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace (울주 대곡리 반구대 암각화), I quickly realized how wrong I was.
What is Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace in Daegok-ri?
The Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace are a collection of prehistoric rock carvings located in Daegok-ri, Eongyang-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. These petroglyphs date back to various periods starting from the New Stone Age and depict animals, humans, and tools used by our ancestors. The terrace itself is named for its distinctive turtle-like shape when viewed from above.
The site offers insights into the daily lives and beliefs of those who lived thousands of years ago. You’ll find vivid representations of hunting scenes, which suggest that these carvings served both artistic and ritualistic purposes. Walking among these ancient artworks feels like stepping back in time.
Is it worth the trip?
Yes, visiting the Petroglyphs is definitely worth your time. Not only can you see one-of-a-kind prehistoric art, but you also get a glimpse into Korea’s ancient cultures that you won’t find elsewhere in Asia. In fact, this site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 12, 2025.
One thing that caught me off guard was how accessible everything was. You can visit any time since it’s open 24 hours a day with no admission fee. Just a heads up though: while the area is well-maintained, it can get muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
How to plan your visit?
You won’t need much preparation for this visit since it’s open year-round and free to enter. The nearest public transport option includes buses that operate from Ulsan city center; just ask locals for directions or use a navigation app for precise routes.
Restrooms are available on-site, making it convenient for families or long visits. For those driving, there’s parking space nearby as well.
What I would do differently next time?
Next time, I’d also try to visit during sunset to catch some stunning views over Yeongosan Mountain; I’ve heard it’s breathtaking from there. So if you’re planning your trip soon, consider timing your visit accordingly!
